Palio of the Brocca
The Juggling Palio is a beautiful historical re-evocation that takes place in Deruta at the end of August each year.
Arrived at the 11th edition, there are 3 walks: Piazza, Valle e Borgo, each of which is referenced as a city gate (Porta di san Michele Archangel for the square square, Porta del cerro for the valley and Roman pots for the village district) .
The event involves adults and children and was born from the reading of a historical memory by Giuseppe Bianconi, where the need to build the Fountain of Piazza dei Consoli and a new drinking water pipeline, due to the earthquakes of 1832 They had made the well of the current fountain unattainable.
Hence the concern of supplying water, a fundamental resource for the population and the production of majolica.
Deruta is in fact the city of the ancient ceramic tradition that has made it famous all over the world.
The races consist of:
• Brocche travel, with water transport (a fundamental element for ceramic processing) in ceramic jugs, three for each district, all painted according to the classic décor decorations, each with a single Rione;
• Race of the Table with transport of terracotta objects;
• Bicycle Table Racing carrying terracotta items;
• Fune Shot;
• New Game Race Race introduced for the first time in this edition, entirely female, three women in each ward will face three staffs carrying a basket full of ceramic objects.
The games are all held in Piazza dei Consoli; The main race (the Race of the Brocche) will take over from the square itself, the highest part of the country and representative of city life around 1830, then to go down to all the typical places derutesi (Valle and Borgo) and then return In the same square.
Competitors of each Ward run the Brocche (3) assigned to them; Each pitcher has the typical decor of the Rione that it represents.
Starting from the 2008 edition, PALIO has also been set up for children and teenagers aged 8 to 15, which will be held on three games.
